What is constitution ? Why is so important ?

Constitution :- The system of fundamental principles according to which a nation , state is governed . 

The constitution of India is the supreme law of India . The Document lays down the demarcating framework and fundamental political code , procedures , powers and duties of government institutions and they set out fundamental rights and directive principles .

[IAST Bharatiya Samvidhan] is original text of the preamble . And our constitution ratified on 26 November 1949 . 

Our constitution has three branches : Executive , legislature and judiciary and our constitution also have two chambers : Rajya sabha and Lok sabha.



Its impacts on constitutional supremacy it was created by a constituent assembly and it was adopted by its people with a declaration of preamble.

Our Constitution was adopted by the constituent assembly of India on 26 November 1949 and it became on effective on 26 January 1950 . 

Its framers repealed prior acts on the British parliament in Article 395 .

Finally , India celebrates  its constitution on 26 January as Republic Day .


The constitution declares india a sovereign , secular , democratic , republic , and assuring its citizens justice liberty and equality to promote fraternity . 

The constitution of India repealed the Indian Independence Act 1947 and Government Of India Act 1935 when it became effectively on 26 January 1950 . 

  • Previous Legislation :- The government of India Act 1858 , the Indian Council Act of 1861 , 1892 and 1909 , the Government of India Act 1919 and 1935 and the Indian Independence Act 1947 which led to the creation of India and Pakistan . 
Constituent Assembly : A constituent assembly is a body of popularly elected representatives which is assembled for the purpose of drafting or adopting a constitution . 

Our Constitution is drafted by the constituent assembly which was elected by elected members of the provincial assemblies .

The Indian constitution is the world longest for a sovereign nation . The constitution has a preamble and 470 articles which are grouped into 25 parts . With 12 schedules and 5 appendices it has been amended 104 times , the latest amendent became effective on 14 January 2019 . 


  • Government sources of power
The executive , legislature and judiciary branches of government receive their power from the constitution . 

India is governed by a parliamentary system of government with the executive directly accountable to the legislature .
